Peter Cetera, born in Chicago, IL, on Sept. 13, 1944, helmed the vocals and bass from the time of the band’s inception through his departure in 1985, when he left Chicago to pursue a solo career.

In 1976, the band scored a major hit with “If You Leave Me Now,” which climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Grammy Award for Pop Performance By a Duo or Group With Vocals. Decades later, the emotional ballad remains instantly recognizable, thanks in part to its appearances across movie and TV soundtracks, including Sex and the City, The Flash, and Modern Family.
The beloved track’s lasting appeal was underscored in 2020, when The Guardian ranked the song at No. 73 on its list of “The Greatest UK No 1s: 100–1,” calling it “impossibly lush and beautifully written” and praising its “pervasive and affecting” sadness.
In total, Cetera, who duetted with Cher in 1989 for the Chances Are theme tune “After All,” featured on 17 albums with Chicago released eight solo albums.
His biggest solo track was 1986’s ‘Glory of Love’ from the Karate Kid II soundtrack, which was nominated for Best Original Song at the 59th Academy Awards.
Stepping away from music in 2019, he said in a podcast interview, “I thought, you know, I’m gonna quit before I lose my voice,” reflecting on the disappointment of seeing a past-their-prime performer on stage. “When you’re on top and flying private … but then, when it all comes back down to earth and you have to get up at 5 in the morning to catch a 6:30 flight, three flights … to get to some casino in the middle of nowhere, and you’ve got to get up the next morning … too much.”
