Carlsbad, which Travel + Leisure crowned its “Best Place to Travel in 2026,” has declared a local emergency as the city races to stabilize a vulnerable stretch of coastal bluff along South Carlsbad Boulevard.

The timing is particularly notable for beachgoers. Just days earlier, severe erosion at nearby Tamarack State Beach stripped away so much sand that visitors were left navigating rocks and potentially dangerous conditions, while a public parking lot was forced to close.
Carlsbad has become arguably America’s trendiest destination, home to LEGOLAND, world-class dining, including celebrity chefs like Richard Blais at Ember & Rye, and newly revived commercial flights, much to some locals’ chagrin.
Regardless, more travelers can skip the 40-minute drive to San Diego and fly right in via American and United for a North County escape that’s actually closer to Orange County.

For tourists, Carlsbad remains very much open for business, but the emergency is a reminder to check conditions before heading straight for the sand.
“I’ve been coming to this beach for like 20 years, and it’s just so sad to see,” one beachgoer told NBC 7 San Diego.
Visitors should keep an eye out for posted warnings and temporary closures, particularly along affected stretches of the coast, while stabilization work gets underway.
Nearby beach towns such as Oceanside, Encinitas, and celebrity-riddled Del Mar are not under the same emergency declaration and may be better alternatives for beachgoers looking to squeeze out the last sunny days of summer.
