A plan to overhaul the front entrance to Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry gained approval on Thursday.
The museum, located at 5700 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive in the city’s Hyde Park neighborhood, will undergo renovations on its North Portico as part of a project to create a new primary entrance that still preserves the building’s historic architecture details, according to the Chicago Department of Planning and Development.
The Landmark Commission’s Permit Review Committee gave the plans a seal of approval. The proposal includes interior and exterior modifications to the north entrance, including the addition of a Welcome Hall, installation of glass curtain walls behind the portico’s historic columns, changes to the north lawn and other alterations.
The museum is also expected to break ground this winter on a $22 million project that includes reopening its south entry for the first time in more than a century.
While the south entry project is expected to be completed in 2027, the construction timeline the north entrance was not immediately clear.
