Rotten Tomatoes currently lists The Green Knight at 88% on the Tomatometer based on 328 critic reviews. Its critics have praised the movie as a fresh take on the Arthurian legend, while also highlighting its cinematography, performances, production design and direction.
The film’s ending also takes a different path from the original poem. Gawain imagines a possible future in which his failure to face the Green Knight leads to a life marked by loss and regret. The sequence is later revealed to be a vision.
Back at the Green Chapel, Gawain finally removes the green girdle that he had hoped would protect him. He prepares to accept the Green Knight’s blow.
The Knight then tells him, “Now, off with your head,” before the film cuts to black.
That ending leaves Gawain’s final fate open to interpretation while completing the test at the heart of his journey.
