ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office shot and killed Gregory Kase on Aug. 9 after responding to a hotel room where he was attempting suicide.
Bodycam footage shows Kase was unable to hear the deputies during the altercation. He then approached deputies with a box cutter, and deputies shot him. Deputies and then say they were never told Kase was deaf.
News10NBC spoke with Kase’s widow at a vigil for him at the Center for Disability Rights. She recalls calling the 911 center the day it all went down.
“My sister was next to me,” Bonnie Kase said.
“I was there with her. And when she called, she called relentlessly. ‘My husband is deaf. He cannot hear you,'” Margaret Barilla said.
Kase and her sister, Barilla, say they called three times with the same message: her husband was trying to kill himself and he could not hear at all in one ear and was partially deaf in the other.
“The second time and the third time when I called and it was a matter of hours that no one got back to me. And so I said, why aren’t you getting back to me? Why aren’t you getting back to me? Tell me how my husband is,” Kase said.
Bodycam video from the confrontation shows deputies asking Kase to drop a knife in his hands. When he approached them saying he couldn’t hear them, he was shot and killed. According to the 911 Call Center, none of the three 911 calls from Bonnie mentions that Gregory is deaf.
“They can say whatever they want, but we know the truth,” Kase said.
Brooke Erickson, Vice President of Direct Services with the Center for Disability Rights, says there needs to be improvements for both mental health crises and accessibility for the disabled.
“For Gregory, being deaf, hard of hearing, suffering a mental health crisis. Not only is it about being deaf or hard of hearing in the community, but [for] the community as a whole, anyone who goes through a mental health crisis, the police have other resources. Where were they during this mental health crisis?” Erickson said.
The two deputies who were involved in the shooting remain on administrative leave. The Kase family’s lawyer is in the process of suing the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Police Benevolent Association says the deputies did not act recklessly or outside their lawful authority.
