Billy Joel is opening up about undergoing brain surgery.
The legendary “Piano Man,” 77, won the hearts of music fans over the years with hits ranging from “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and “Only the Good Die Young” to “She’s Always a Woman” and “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.” But the beloved musician has faced health issues in recent years, and he just shared an update on his health on SiriusXM’s The Billy Joel Channel that he underwent brain surgery and a shunt was placed. That follows his diagnosis with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), which he revealed last year.
Joel said in the interview that he was initially resistant to the idea of brain surgery.
“I said, ‘Well, what does that entail?’ ‘Well, we drill a hole through your skull and we stick a shunt inside your brain.’ I said, ‘Nah, I think I’ll pass on that.’ I didn’t want to do that, but then I read up on it and I realized it can help improve your balance and can help your memory. You know, I don’t want to lose my marbles,” Joel shared, Entertainment Weekly reported. “It’s hard to tell what’s age and what’s a condition, so I agreed to do the shunt. I had a surgery and they implanted a shunt in my brain — and it actually improved things.”

When Did Billy Joel Announce His Illness?
Last May, Joel canceled his upcoming concerts, including a major tour. He revealed he was living with a brain disorder known as normal pressure hydrocephalus, or NPH. As a result, he was struggling with “problems with hearing, vision and balance,” he said in a statement.
The star shared that he knew something was wrong because “my balance was not good.”
“I had this sense of being on a boat, like this rocking motion. I wasn’t steady on my feet. I didn’t know why that was and I went to meet with the neurologist, and I was diagnosed with having something called normal pressure hydrocephalus, which they used to call water on the brain,” Joel noted in the interview.
