U.S. Olympian and American Record holder Shaine Casas confirmed to SwimSwam today that he has left the University of Texas pro group led by Bob Bowman.
The Texas pro group has become one of the top training groups in the country with world record holders Leon Marchand, Summer McIntosh, Regan Smith, and Hubert Kos all training in Austin.
Casas first moved to Austin in 2022 after spending three years at Texas A&M University before missing the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team by three tenths of a second. Shortly before the 2021-2022 NCAA season, Casas entered the portal before deciding to turn pro.
He made the move to Austin in January of 2022 to train under long-time Longhorn coach Eddie Reese. Shortly after his move, he made the 2022 World Championship team where he won the world bronze medal in the 200 backstroke.
In 2023, he qualified for the Worlds team in the 200 IM, where he finished 4th, and in February of 2024, he was one of just 18 athletes named to the 2024 World Championships team in Doha to swim the 200 IM, and 50 and 100 fly. There, his highest finish came in the 200 IM, where he took 5th.
Shortly after the Doha World Championships, it was announced that Bob Bowman would be taking over the position from Reese, who was set to retire after the 2024 Olympic Trials. Later that summer, he qualified for the U.S. Olympic team in the 200 IM, where he finished 9th in the semifinal, one spot out of the final.
At the SC World Championships in 2024, Casas had a great meet, winning the men’s 200 IM for his first ever major international gold medal in an American Record time of 1:49.51.
He ended up qualifying for three events at the 2025 World Championships in Singapore, where he won the silver medal in the 200 IM, becoming the 4th fastest performer in history in the event with his 1:54.30.
A few months after his strong performance in Singapore, Casas broke his own American record in the SC 200 IM, swimming 1:49.43 to win the Carmel stop of the World Cup and hold off world record holder Leon Marchand.
Casas was one of the Texas athletes who had a lackluster Pan Pacs. He did not earn any medals, and his highest only finals swim came in the 100 fly, where he finished 5th overall in 51.24. After winning the silver medal at the 2025 Worlds, Casas did not even make the final in the 200 IM, finishing 12th overall in 2:01.08.
There are two years left before the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, and he a change in his training will give him a season to figure out if it’s working before the Games. While Casas has left the Texas training group, he has not confirmed to SwimSwam where he will be continuing his training.
