You know it’s after Labor Day and we’re turning our attention to hockey when the national folks start cranking out rumor mills and updates. We got a couple of those on Tuesday from Pierre LeBrun and Chris Johnston at The Athletic. I’ll have more from those later in a season-opening Around the NHL. For anyone who is a Sirius/XM subscriber, I’ll be on NHL Network Radio around 3 PM CT today to talk all things Blackhawks.
Alex Vlasic continues to be one of the Blackhawks’ best ambassadors in the community. He’s done a lot of work with Misericordia Home since he joined the Hawks. He’ll be at their annual Family Fest on Sept. 13 to do the autograph and photo thing. I’ll be both surprised and disappointed if he doesn’t have a permanent A on his chest when the Blackhawks name their new leadership group this coming season.A post shared by Misericordia Home (@misericordiahome)
The Patrick Kane Return Tour will be at the Chicago Fire game tonight, where he’ll sound the alarm. Apparently he is a forward and a right wing for the Blackhawks. Note to self…A post shared by Chicago Fire FC (@chicagofire)
Among the more noteworthy items from the insiders on Tuesday for Blackhawks fans: LeBrun reports the 2027 NHL Draft will be decentralized again (boo!) and you can circle June 25-26 on your calendars and plan your summer accordingly. The NHL draft, which is being held June 25-26, will once again be with the de-centralized format for a third year in a row, the league confirms.
— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) September 8, 2026 The fantasy hockey crew at Daily Faceoff wrote their Must Draft lists for this year, which are based on players whose average draft ranking is lower than their production value would likely indicate. Nick Szeman included Connor Bedard on his list. Bedard’s ADP is 63.6 right now. Here’s part of what Szeman wrote about the Blackhawks star forward:Bedard may not be the 116-point scorer he was pacing to become before his injury, but he is ready to take the next step and should be able to flirt with 100 points. Even if he misses the first month of the season, drafting Bedard is a no-brainer, especially at his current fifth-round ADP.

— Daily Faceoff (@DailyFaceoff) September 8, 2026 Kalen Lumpkins at the Chicago Tribune wrote a good look at the path forward for the Blackhawks’ top pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, defenseman Xavier Villeneuve. He’s got plenty of time to grow and develop, and he’s in a great place to do both at Boston University. Blackhawks 2027 seventh-round pick William Sörbrand scored his first goal for Timrå in Finland on Tuesday.#Blackhawks prospect, William Sörbrand (#44 in red) scored his first goal of the season yesterday! pic.twitter.com/agUDTzLcZz
— Chicago Prospects (@Chi_Prospects) September 8, 2026 Mike G. Morreale NHL.com wrote about the top prospects and rookies who will be attending upcoming rookie camps and prospect tournaments. They didn’t mention any Blackhawks, which isn’t a huge surprise with Anton Frondell and Roman Kantserov not participating in the rookie showcase games against the Blues next week. It still would have been nice to see a Sacha Boisvert mention, however. He did skate in NHL games last season. For what it’s worth, Morreale didn’t mention anyone from the Blues, either. Speaking of the Blackhawks’ prospect showcase games, we finally learned which Blues players will be in Chicago for the games next week.We Finally Know the Blues' Roster for Next Week's Prospect Showcase Games t.co/HbHeXQQ3aO
— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) September 8, 2026 Finally, Jon Greenberg at The Athletic wrote what is indeed a fun column in which he nominated individuals for a Bad Owners Hall of Fame. Representing the NHL in his Hall are James Dolan (Rangers) and Harold Ballard (Maple Leafs). And… one former owner of the Chicago Blackhawks. Here’s what he wrote about Bill Wirtz:“Dollar Bill” refused to air Blackhawks home games on TV because he believed it devalued season tickets. This was still a thing when he died in 2007, even though he co-owned the Chicago RSN. His son Rocky immediately rectified this affront, and the Blackhawks took off after he died.
