A University of Iowa student has died after they collapsed during Saturday’s football game against Northern Illinois University.
According to a statement from Dr. Eric Bush, director of the school’s marching band, and Dr. Tammie Walker, the director of the school of music, Derek Phillips passed away after suffering a “significant medical emergency” during the Saturday game at Kinnick Stadium.
Phillips was taken to an area hospital after going into cardiac arrest according to his family, and he passed away Tuesday morning after being taken off life support, according to the school.
He was described as the leader of the band’s mellophone section and as a musician and student who “represented the very best of what it means to be a Hawkeye,” according to the statement.
“We will continue to walk the journey together, and we will continue to provide support and resources to our students to ensure they are getting the care they need,” school officials said.
Counselors will be available for students and the marching band during the upcoming week, and encouraged students to reach out to loved ones in the aftermath of the tragedy.
The band will pay tribute to Phillips for the remainder of the school year, with tributes being finalized in the weeks ahead.
Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz expressed his condolences to Phillips’ family after the tragedy.
“On behalf of everybody associated with our program we want to offer our thoughts, our condolences to his family, his friends, and all the people that he impacted in his life. It’s just a really, really, very, very sad thing,” he said.
