After being turned down by a few artists, including Nashville’s Bobby Hebb, the song was given to Proctor by producer Jerry Ross. There was just one problem: “I didn’t like ‘Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie,’” Proctor admitted to Rebeat magazine. “I’m a very soulful singer, and there wasn’t any soul in that song at all. I didn’t want to sing about no damn fruit!”
But instead of fighting the recording or turning it down, he took Ross’ instruction and went with it. “I’m raw off the street, I don’t know anything about music, so I just opened my mouth and whatever came out, came out. Well, whatever came out pleased him, so we got to release it,” Proctor told the outlet.
Unbeknownst to the band, upon the song’s release, the record’s label noted it was by Jay & the Techniques, a name change orchestrated by Ross. “I think Jerry changed it because there was Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, and Martha and the Vandellas, and he just didn’t like that single-name thing. It wasn’t that I was the leader of the group, just the lead singer on the song. Then it didn’t make sense to change it back after the song was a hit,” Proctor explained to Rebeat.
