1985 Super Bowl Champ Matt Suhey Has Passed Away
I didn’t get a chance to see Matt Suhey play when he was at the peak of his powers. But I’ve talked to enough older Bears fans to know how important he was to the team’s success.
Suhey is one of the more unheralded players in franchise history. As a fullback throughout the 1980s, Suhey cleared the way for many of Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton’s highlight-reel runs as Sweetness’ primary blocker. Given their relationship as backfield tag team partners, it makes sense that those two were close even after their respective playing careers ended.

Mandatory Credit: USA TODAY SportsIn addition to the 148 regular-season games (100 starts) Suhey made for the Bears, he also played nine games in the five postseason trips he made while with the team. He tallied 43 carries, 156 rushing yards, and one touchdown. That score was notable, as it was the first by a Bears player in the Super Bowl.
