No. 6 Alabama soccer just keeps winning.
The Crimson Tide took down in-state rival Samford 1-0 Thursday night in its penultimate non-conference test, equaling the 1994 team’s best-ever start to a season at 7-0-0. The Crimson Tide also recorded a fourth-straight clean sheet for the first time since the 2020-21 season.
Forward Ashley Roni broke the deadlock in the 80th minute, converting an assist from fellow forward Larkin Thomason and slotting it home into the right side of the net. The goal marked Roni’s fifth of the season and third game-winner, while Thomason recorded her 100th-career point.
Samford dominated the opening 45 minutes, tallying nine shots to Alabama’s two. The Bulldogs also held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Despite the mounting pressure, the Crimson Tide’s defense held strong as goalkeeper Madi Munguia, the reigning SEC defensive player of the week, recorded three first-half saves, bringing the two teams to halftime scoreless.
“I thought that it was the first time all season that we got outcompeted,” said head coach Wes Hart . “I wish that I could just chop it up to that we did not play well, but there is a reason that we didn’t play well today and it is because they outcompeted us.”
The Crimson Tide found more attacking opportunities after halftime, recording six second-half shots. Samford goalkeeper Peyton Hull denied two early opportunities from the Crimson Tide before Roni broke through late to put the Crimson Tide firmly ahead.
“I thought we came to life in the second half, created good opportunities and got rewarded and just held them off from there,” Hart said. “I have been doing this long enough to know that a win is a win. You take them anywhere where you can get them.”
Alabama will return to action at home on Sunday against Harvard in its final non-conference game, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. CT. The Crimson Tide will open SEC play on the road next Friday against Auburn in the Iron Bowl of Soccer.
