Chapel Hill and Carrboro community members are now able to submit their pitches to try and temporarily join the CHCCS Board of Education.
Following Rani Dasi’s departure from the office to join the Orange County Board of Commissioners in August, the school board now has a vacant seat to fill on its seven-member body. North Carolina law requires that vacancy to be filled — but has few directives on how, leaving the district’s decision-makers to create the plan and pick who will finish Dasi’s term through the end of 2027.
During the school board’s September 3 work session, Chair Riza Jenkins laid out an open application process and timeline for the current board members to review candidates. The two-term elected official said she based the application off of the past instances where the board has filled a vacancy — most recently in 2020. The application has only two questions: whether the person meets the requirements to be able to serve (a registered voter in Chapel Hill-Carrboro school district’s limits), and why do they wish to serve on the school board?
“I thought back to…other applications I’ve seen and I [thought], you know, that’s really all the requirements that we had to have as a board member,” Jenkins said on Thursday. “[It is whether] we meet the requirements, and then why do we want to serve. That was the question that we got asked. So, I wanted to make sure we kept it simple and it wasn’t a barrier for anyone who might be interested in applying.”
Jenkins’ colleagues agreed and got confirmation the application would be shared in Spanish and Mandarin in addition to English to accommodate for the other primary languages spoken by community members. Board members also agreed on the timeline to receive applications: starting Friday, September 4 and running through Monday, September 14 at 12 p.m.
There was also a brief discussion on the timeline of reviewing applications. While Jenkins initially suggested holding September 15 and 16 as possible dates for a specially-called meeting for board members to go through the submissions in a public session, Board Member Vickie Feaster Fornville suggested waiting until after the elected body’s next regular business meeting on Thursday, September 17.
“Are we possibly open to moving the selection date,” she asked, “considering what we know we’re going to have on our agenda for the 17th? So that we don’t have to feel pushed to have a placement because we know we’re fine with six [members], if need be?”
The other board members agreed and ultimately chose September 23 and 24 as the dates to block off for a specially-called meeting to review applications and potentially interview candidates. The board also confirmed they will then formally vote on its preference to fill the vacant seat and finish Dasi’s term during its regular business meeting on Thursday, October 1. A date for swearing in that person will be chosen later.
The CHCCS district created a webpage for interested community members to access the online application, while paper copies are available at the front desk of the Lincoln Center at 750 South Merritt Mill Road in Chapel Hill. Any submitted application will be public record and could be publicly discussed by the board members.
