The CU Buffs won their first game of the 2026 season last night in exciting fashion.
After a defensive battle between the Buffaloes and Yellow Jackets in Atlanta, each team’s offense came alive in the fourth quarter.
Colorado drove the field and scored quickly, but so did Georgia Tech, until Boo Carter came off the edge and blocked the final field goal.

When the Buffaloes and Yellow Jackets went toe-to-toe on Thursday Night, it was clearly each team’s first game of the season.
Both teams were rusty and it was and up and down battle. Both teams made mistakes followed by big plays. Or vice versa.
That was the case in the last two minutes.
Georgia Tech led 13-7 in the fourth quarter after their 13-play drive ended with a field goal by Aiden Birr. CU got the ball back and did what they weren’t able to do all night long; hit on big plays.
JuJu Lewis hit DeKalon Taylor in stride out of the backfield for a 17-yard pass play on the first play of the drive. Three plays later he connected with Joseph Williams outside for a 16-yard catch and run.
Then Taylor, who came alive on that game-winning drive, caught Georgia Tech off guard on a 3rd and 3 and ran where no defenders were for another 16-yard gain. Suddenly, CU was in the red zone with 42 seconds to go.
That’s when Lewis made the best throw of the night for either team, hitting Charlie Williams perfectly over the outstretched arms of a defender for the touchdown.

“He dialed it up and JuJu made the correct play, I’m proud of him,” head coach Deion Sanders said of the game-winning touchdown throw.
Georgia Tech was almost certainly sunk, right?
37 seconds wasn’t going to be enough to get into field goal range; their longest play of the day was a 22-yard pass way back in the second quarter.
But Alberto Mendoza uncorked a beautiful ball to Dalen Penson, who was open because a Buffs defender fell down, for 42 yards. All of a sudden the Yellow Jackets were in field goal range.
A short pass and a short run set them up at the CU 37 for the game-winning field goal.
But Carter rushed off the edge with speed and blocked it beautifully.

The Buffs were victorious.
“I never flinched, man,” Sanders said postgame. “I told several people on the sideline, we’re gonna make it very, very interesting, but we’re gonna win this game.”
Colorado physically dominated Georgia Tech
While Lewis continues to get his footing at quarterback and struggled to throw consistently, the run game was on fire last night.
CU ran for 183 yards vs. only 51 for GT.
“We rushed for a buck 83? My God,” Sanders said. “They rushed for 51? I thought we were small. You talk about another team that’s also a physical team. To go out there and do this, when you’re talking about the run and we’re a small team — don’t know where that came from — but I’m certainly happy with the results.”
In the second half, CU ran the ball on 24-of-33 plays. That included the methodical 17-play drive where the Buffs ran 9-plus minutes off the clock and set up a field goal in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, it was blocked.
But Colorado knew they could run and Georgia Tech couldn’t stop them on a hot and humid night where their defense was worn down.
In all, seven players ran the ball for CU with Damian Henderson leading the way with 12 rushes for 65 yards. Taylor was a big spark late, providing fresh legs against the tired Georgia Tech defenders.
“When the passing game isn’t working, you have to go with what you know,” Sanders said. “Now we’re growing as we mature.”
Now, the Buffs have a long week to recover after starting the season on Thursday night. They host the Weber State Wildcats at Folsom Field next Saturday, Sept. 12 with a 1:30 p.m. kickoff. Colorado will look to start the season 2-0 in front of the Buffs backers standing shoulder to shoulder in Boulder.
