August 31st – September 4th São Paulo, Brazil SCM (25m) SC World Championships Qualifier Qualifying Criteria ResultsThe penultimate day of action at the 2026 Jose Finkel Trophy brought about another Brazilian and South American record, this time at the hands of Maria Fernanda Costa.
Racing in the final of the women’s 200m freestyle, 23-year-old Costa busted out a time of 1:53.56 to grab the gold, qualifying for the event at this year’s Short Course World Championships taking place in Beijing, China.
Costa easily defeated the pack in the contest, with Unisanta teammate and University of Michigan Wolverine Stephanie Balduccini securing silver nearly two seconds behind in 1:55.50. Aline Rodrigues also landed on the podium in 1:57.18, good enough for bronze.
As for Costa, her effort overtook her own former South American standard of 1:54.22, which she established as the lead-off on Brazil’s women’s 4x200m free relay at the 2024 Short Course World Championships.
