Formula 1 teams have unanimously backed a modest reduction in Grand Prix distances for 2027, paving the way for shorter races as the championship grapples with the energy-management challenges created by its new-generation power units.
The change is designed to address a practical problem that emerged after the sweeping overhaul of F1’s power-unit regulations for 2026.
With the internal combustion engine and electrical component initially contributing an equal 50 percent of the available power, some circuits have proved particularly demanding when it comes to energy deployment and recovery.
Monza, with its long straights and limited opportunities to recharge the battery, is expected to provide the clearest demonstration yet of the issue this weekend.
The regulations are already scheduled to evolve. From 2027, the power balance will shift to 58 percent ICE and 42 percent electrical power, before moving further toward a 60-40 split in 2028. Increasing fuel-flow rates will help achieve those changes, but the knock-on effect is that cars will require more fuel to cover the same Grand Prix distance.
That presented teams with an unwelcome prospect: redesigning their 2027 cars to accommodate larger fuel loads when those machines had already been conceived around existing tank capacities.
Shorter races offer teams a simpler solution
Rather than forcing teams into a wholesale redesign, F1 and the FIA have agreed to trim the standard race distance from 305km to 290km, or the first lap completed beyond 305km under the current definition.
For most venues, that should translate into races being shortened by approximately two to four laps. Monaco is the exception.
Its Grand Prix has long been capped at 260km because of the circuit’s slow nature and the difficulty of completing the standard distance within the time limit, so its race will remain unchanged.
The package also includes a procedural alteration on race morning. Drivers will be restricted to a single formation-style sighting lap when making their way to the grid, ending the practice of completing multiple tours and returning through the pitlane.
For now, the shorter distance is being pursued specifically for 2027, largely because the fuel-flow adjustment is being introduced at relatively short notice. However, the 290km limit could remain beyond next season if further complications emerge.
The proposal still requires formal approval from the FIA World Motor Sport Council, although that final step is expected to be little more than a formality given the unanimous backing from the teams.
