Doggy daycare in NW suburbs facing animal cruelty charges after dog dies in sweltering van ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A doggy daycare in the northwest suburbs is facing animal cruelty charges after a family’s beloved black lab died when he was forgotten inside a sweltering van Wednesday.

“He was the perfect black lab,” Steve Serota, of Deerfield, said of his 6-year-old black lab, Miller. “He was phenomenal family dog. He was part of our family.”

Serota said Miller, who weighed 110 pounds, was a regular at Waggles Pet Resort in Wheeling for about five years. The facility, at 419 Harvester Court in Wheeling, is described as veterinary recommended “premiere resort for pets,” with private suite overnight care, training and dog grooming services.

Waggles also a chauffeur service that will pick pets up.

“Part of our goal at Waggles is to make life easier for pet parents,” the resort website said. “That’s why we offer a safe and convenient chauffeur service to and from your home and our resort. Our temperature-controlled transport van is spacious, secure and comfortable. Let us chauffeur your pet in style.”

Wednesday started out no different, Serota said, as Miller was picked up about 9 a.m. in a company van. As the day went on, a heat advisory for the entire Chicago area went into effect, with temperatures in the mid 90s and heat index values between 100 and 110 degrees.

About 4 p.m., Serota said he received a call from the resort that Miller had been left in the van all day and had died. Serota told NBC Chicago he was “completely shocked.”

“He’s loud. He’s big, he’s right at your eye level,” Serota said. “And the fact of the matter, if they missed him there, how did they not know he was not there the whole day?” Serota said. “It does not make sense how something like this could happen.”

Serota said Miller was in the first crate near the front of the van.

“He is literally the first thing you see when you open that up,” he said. “It doesn’t compute as to how someone could leave him there. And leave him there for hours.”

The Wheeling Police confirmed to NBC Chicago Thursday that animal cruelty charges were filed in the case.

“There was a gross amount of negligence here that could ever allow something like this to happen, from my perspective those safeguards need to be implemented immediately to ensure that nothing like this could ever happen again,” Serota said.

Waggles told NBC Chicago Thursday they have “no comment at this time.”
