UEFA Champions League Match Predictions: The Opta Supercomputer’s Picks for This Week ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

With the help of the AI-powered Opta supercomputer, we provide our UEFA Champions League match predictions for every game across the 2026-27 competition.

The Opta supercomputer will again be with us every step of the way in the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League as the model works to provide you with data-backed predictions for all matches and season outcomes.

Paris Saint-Germain have won back-to-back Champions League crowns after their penalty-shootout win over Arsenal in last season’s final, and they are among the favourites once again this time around. Real Madrid were the last team to win the UCL in three consecutive seasons, doing so in 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18.

The Spanish giants, alongside rivals Barcelona, will be among the leading contenders in 2026-27, along with a host of Premier League clubs. There will be five English top-flight teams competing in the league phase this time around, with Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool among the favourites, and Manchester United alongside Aston Villa in the chasing pack.

Bayern Munich haven’t won the Champions League since 2020, but will undoubtedly be in the mix again this season, while Serie A clubs Inter Milan, Como, Napoli and Roma will be hoping to end a 17-year wait for an Italian winner.

Below, Opta Analyst provides detailed predictions for each game from Matchday 2, powered by thousands of simulations from the Opta supercomputer.

Matchday 2

Tuesday 13 October

Matchday 2 of the 2026-27 Champions League gets under way on Tuesday with two of the – shall we say – less glamorous fixtures.

But while Lens vs Sporting CP isn’t exactly a game between two heavyweights, results on MD1 suggest it should provide some excitement. Both began their European campaigns with victories, Sporting coming from behind to beat Galatasaray 3-1 and Lens scoring two injury-time goals to snatch a 3-2 win at Slavia Prague. With Lens’ equaliser timed at 90:47, it was the latest a side has ever been trailing in a Champions League away match that they went on to win (excluding extra-time).

This one is almost perfectly balanced in the eyes of the Opta supercomputer, with Lens winning 38.9% of pre-match simulations, and Sporting winning 35.9%.

Sabah play at home in the Champions League for the first time in Tuesday’s other early game, with Slavia Prague the visitors. Slavia face a long trip east to Azerbaijan for this one, but they won’t face many easier Champions League games according to the supercomputer. They are favourites, winning 45.7% of simulations, while Sabah bounced back from a 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford on MD1 with a win 29.1% of the time.

Manchester United face a tough task themselves, travelling to Atlético Madrid for the most eye-catching game of Tuesday’s schedule. They have never beaten Atlético in four attempts (D2 L2), only having faced Sevilla more times (five) in the competition without ever winning.

Diego Simeone’s side may have only won two of their last 15 games against English opposition, including 10 defeats, but they are backed to win here, victorious in 48.5% of the supercomputer’s simulations.

The other English side in action on Tuesday are Arsenal, who are looking to extend their winning run in the league phase. They last failed to win at this stage of the Champions League in November 2024, having kicked off this season with a 1-0 victory at Napoli after winning all eight league-phase games last season.

They host Lille in the first ever meeting between the clubs, and the returning Olivier Giroud will hope to make an appearance for the visitors. He could become only the third player to score both for and against Arsenal in the Champions League, after Tomás Rosicky and Eduardo da Silva.

Lille last avoided defeat in a Champions League game against an English side in November 2005, and they are expected to extend their run of seven consecutive defeats to Premier League opposition here. The Opta supercomputer gives Arsenal a 72.1% chance of victory.

Barcelona travel to Turkey for a testing game with Galatasaray, but they are expected to overcome the atmosphere and make it two wins from two after a convincing start on MD1, when Hansi Flick’s side thrashed Feyenoord 5-1.

Barcelona have now scored 80 goals in 27 Champions League matches since Flick took charge, scoring at an average of 2.96 goals per game, the highest goals-per-game ratio for any club with 20+ games under a specific manager in the competition’s history.

Galatasaray have won only one of their last 22 games against Spanish opposition, with their last victory coming against Real Madrid in April 2013 in what was as good as a dead rubber in the second leg of a quarter-final tie.

That run is expected to continue here; Barça won 68.9% of the supercomputer’s pre-match simulations, with Galatasaray winning just 13.4%.

Two sides looking to bounce back from MD1 defeats meet at San Siro as Inter host Club Brugge. Inter lost 2-1 to Real Madrid after making two huge errors to gift their opponents their goals, while Brugge were beaten 3-2 at home by Aston Villa.

These sides have never met before in any competition, so there is no history to go off in that sense, but Brugge have a poor record against other Italian sides, having won only one of their last nine such games. That said, that victory was only last year: a 3-1 win over Atalanta in the Champions League play-off round in February 2025.

Inter are unsurprisingly the favourites, winning 70.2% of the supercomputer’s simulations, while Brugge pulled off an unlikely win 12.2% of the time.

Another one-sided affair is expected in Norway as Bayern Munich travel north to face Viking, who are playing a home game in the Champions League for the first time since 1992-93 (before the group stage existed).

They kicked off their first ever group stage/league phase last time out with a defeat at Stuttgart, and face more – and tougher – German opposition this time around, too. They have lost each of their four games against Bundesliga sides this century, while failing to score in three of them – the exception being last time out at Stuttgart.

Bayern have scored 30 goals in nine games against Norwegian teams, and are backed to win comfortably here, too. The supercomputer’s simulations ended in Bayern victory 79.4% of the time.

The final two games on our list of Tuesday’s fixtures are predicted to be more evenly contested than a few of the games we’ve already covered.

Villarreal are favourites against Napoli, but this is no foregone conclusion, with the Spaniards winning 44.3% of simulations to Napoli’s 31.2%.

Part of that may be because Napoli are winless in their last eight games against Spanish sides in the Champions League (D2 L6), with their last victory coming all the way back in 2011-12.

The Yellow Submarine therefore have a decent chance of avoiding an unwanted record: if they lose this match, they will become the first Spanish team ever to suffer eight consecutive defeats in the European Cup or Champions League. The supercomputer reckons they have almost a seven-in-10 chance of making sure that doesn’t happen.

RB Leipzig will look to bounce back from a humbling 4-1 defeat at Como last time out, and the supercomputer has them down as favourites to win their meeting with PSV Eindhoven.

However, Leipzig have lost eight of their last nine games in the Champions League; of teams to appear in multiple campaigns since the start of the 2024-25 edition, only Slovan Bratislava (100%) have a higher loss percentage in the competition than them (89%).

This is a good opportunity to get a positive result on the board, facing a PSV side who have never won in 10 attempts away to a German opponent in the Champions League or European Cup. Leipzig are given a 51.0% chance of victory, with PSV winning 26.7% of the time.

Wednesday 14 October

Wednesday’s action kicks off with two early games between Feyenoord and Como in Rotterdam and Liverpool travelling to Linz to play Austrian side LASK.

Liverpool began the 2026-27 league phase with a 2-1 win at home to Atlético Madrid, with goals from Erling Haaland. If he scores in this match, Haaland (currently on 36 goals in 40 apps) will overtake Sergio Agüero (36 goals in 64 apps) to become Man City’s top scorer in the Champions League.

Home advantage could be key here, and that’s helped City win this game (43.4%) more often than PSG (33.0%) across the Opta supercomputer’s pre-match simulations.

Another standout game on Wednesday takes place in Rome, where record champions Real Madrid travel to Roma.

Now Madrid boss once again, José Mourinho managed Roma for two and a half years between July 2021 and January 2024, guiding them to their only major European trophy in the last 30 years with Conference League glory in 2021-22.

Roma have lost each of their last four UCL games versus Real Madrid without scoring a goal, so the Opta supercomputer’s projection that Madrid are the more likely victors in this clash (47.7%) feels warranted.
