The devilish duo had a slow-burn for the ages, starting as colleagues in the beloved fantasy series, before developing an unlikely friendship and then, finally (as fans punched the air), a romance.
Speaking exclusively to Radio Times, Ellis explained: "There's the element of destiny about it that people always romanticise.
Ellis added: "But also, I think one of the saving graces of the show was the sense of humour that it had. It never took itself too seriously, and I think that sort of distracted our audience. They didn't realise that they were becoming so invested in this story because they were laughing along the way.
"What that meant was we were able, from time to time, to really land moments and pull the rug from under their feet. You're left a bit breathless and a bit involved, and your hairs are up, and you're like, 'I didn't know I was feeling this'
While Lucifer ended in 2021, Ellis has continued to work in the US, now focusing on his new procedural drama CIA, which follows rule-breaking intelligence agent Colin Glass (Ellis) and his unlikely partner Bill Randall (Nick Gehlfuss).
"There was lots of things that resonated with me," Ellis explained of the series.
Ellis added: "One of the big things was how incredibly lonely an existence it is. You can't talk to anyone about it. Some people don't have partners who don't even know that they're doing what they do, and so a lot of them don't even have partners because it's just not even worth it.
