A child is dead and a mother hospitalized after she was found attempting self-harm in a scene officials said left a southern Chicago suburb “in shock.”
The situation unfolded late Tuesday afternoon as authorities said a 2-year-old was discovered unresponsive and officers arrived to find the child’s mother attempting self-harm. A homicide investigation is now underway.
Frankfort is approximately 36 miles south of Chicago.

What happened on Brook Stone Court in Frankfort?
According to police, officers were called just after 4 p.m. Tuesday to the 22700 block of Brook Stone Court for a report of an unresponsive child. There, they found a 2-year-old at the home and CPR was being administered.
The child was taken to a local hospital for treatment, but was later pronounced dead, police said.
Also at the home, police said the child’s mother was discovered attempting self-harm. She was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police said a preliminary investigation indicated the incident was a “domestic-related homicide.”
Where does the investigation stand?
As of Wednesday, officials told NBC Chicago the mother of the child remained under “observation.”
The Will County Coroner’s office confirmed the death of the 2-year-old was “the result of an apparent homicide.” A cause and manner of death was not immediately released, however, and was pending police and toxicological reports.
Frankfort police and the Will Grundy Major Crimes Task Force are investigating.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy,” Frankfort police said in a statemenet. “We encourage our community to support one another with compassion, understanding, and strength as we navigate this difficult time together.”
Mayor asks for compassion
Frankfort Mayor Keith Ogle said he learned of the situation from a call from the city’s police chief.
“Everybody was in shock, and this is just a horrible thing in the community. I’m a father with two daughters who just had babies recently, and it’s very difficult for everybody here,” he told NBC Chicago.
Ogle acknowledged while the circumstances are “very difficult for the community,” he urged residents to withhold judgment until the facts of the case are released.
“I don’t want people to draw conclusions out of school on this,” he said. “Let the investigators get the information, get the facts. They’ll interview neighbors, other people that are involved, and we’ll get a complete picture, or as best as we can.”
Ogle confirmed that other children lived at the home in addition to the 2-year-old killed, but he did not say how many children or how old they are.
Neighbors stunned
“This is just absolutely heartbreaking to understand what happened a couple blocks away and that it’s impacting our community,” said Carolyn Pappas, who lives around the block from where the incident took place.
Pappas, a mother to a 2-year-old herself, said the investigation has stunned the local community.
“This is just absolutely devastating, that this could be another Lindsay Clancy situation in our neighborhood, in our community. You never think it’s going to hit so close to home,” she said. “And so yeah, that absolutely makes us think of that. And again, just more people I think are struggling than we realize and so we just need to be there for one another.”
She said it serves as a wake-up call that “someone could be suffering potentially so badly next door and we don’t know that.”
“I think it’s an opportunity for us all, you know, check on one another and make sure that we’re all there for one another and that we don’t allow this to happen again,” she said.
