Sometimes, when it is as hot, humid, and sticky as it has been in Chicago the last few days, it can be hard to think about Bears football. I could really go for a chill breeze, leaves changing colors, and an aerial view of Soldier Field with the skyline in the background.
I’m not a huge podcast guy. But because my friends are, I listen to their suggestions and will tune in when certain pods do shows on things I’m interested in. Over the last year-and-a-half, I’ve drifted toward The Athletic Football Show as one of the pods I’ll listen to regularly. On Tuesday, they did a live show at Lincoln Hall in Chicago. One of my favorite things about the pod is that their conversations always get me thinking about the Bears and other teams in a different light. It feels good to expand your horizons. There was a conversation during the Q&A segment of the podcast about Bears GM Ryan Poles and his team-building. I won’t spoil it for those of you who want to listen to the pod when it drops. But it definitely has me thinking about how to grade Poles as he enters Year 5 as the team’s general manager. I’ll have some thoughts on this later this week. Poles wasn’t sure about Booker’s status for Week 1. It will be worth monitoring his updates over the next week. The first injury report of the new league year will drop one week from today. I’m already bracing myself for the worst. The Tribune’s Phil Thompson has more on the recent Bears roster shakeup. I’m liking how the team is piecing together the practice squad with a mix of young, developmental players and veterans who can help in a pinch. Part of me wishes the team were using a practice squad spot for an emergency kicker, but perhaps this coaching staff and front office believes there are better uses of the spot. And I’m inclined to give Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson the benefit of the doubt here.
