That didn’t stop Leavitt from joining Kiffin at LSU. And with days to go until its regular-season opener against Clemson, the spotlight is once again on Kiffin and the program. This time, it’s relating to Kiffin’s decision to recruit undrafted NFL rookies despite the SEC’s policy against them playing in the league.
Headlines aside, the Tigers are hoping to do something they weren’t able to do under Brian Kelly: play in the College Football Playoff. And Kiffin and his staff have worked hard to build a strong bond with each other both on and off the field, Leavitt said.
“Everyone knows he’s really forward-thinking, but I think the coolest thing about him and just everybody else upstairs is just the camaraderie from the coaching staff perspective,” he said. “Like, they really do feel like a family. They enjoy spending time with each other, you know, running around on the field, competing and everything, playing pickleball.”
That bond between the coaches has trickled down to the players, the Tigers quarterback added.
“The whole team’s been vibing and playing as a collective group and unit, and that only happens because of the way that everything’s up is upstairs,” Leavitt said. “It goes into all the position rooms, and when we’re sitting in here for unit and team meetings, just the way that coaches are able to call in other coaches, and they understand exactly what they’re going to get out of each other.”
