Eric Dane had a blunt explanation for why he believed Grey’s Anatomy was done with Mark Sloan.
In an excerpt from My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, shared by PEOPLE on Sunday, October 18, the actor wrote about his addiction, his time on the beloved medical drama, and a tender memory with his daughter Billie. The book is scheduled to be released on November 3.
Dane joined Grey’s in its second season as Dr. Mark Sloan. He wrote that he entered treatment five times during his run on the medical drama, and that his addiction changed how he felt and behaved on set. “Over time, I come out improved. I do my best. I manage my addictions, I stay sober on set,” he wrote.
Dane said he loved playing Mark but felt ready to move on after eight years. For those unfamiliar, his character was written out at the end of Season 8, dying after a plane crash that took Chyler Leigh’s Lexie Grey.

Dane wrote that his departure was not caused by his addiction, though he believed it had not helped. He attributed the decision to money, writing, “Despite Mark Sloan’s popularity, I have become too expensive. I have become expendable.”
A moment with his daughter
The memoir also recalls a December 2025 performance of The Nutcracker by Billie, then 15. Dane had a tradition of hugging her after she danced, but by that point he could no longer lift his arms. “I’m so sorry I can’t wrap my arms around you,” he told her, per the book. “I can’t lift my arms anymore.”
Dane wrote that they both began to cry. Despite the heartbreak, he described the moment as “incredibly beautiful,” and said he felt wonderful afterward.
Eric Dane’s death
Dane died on February 19 at 53 after a battle with ALS, his family confirmed in a statement. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world,” they shared.
The statement also noted that Dane became “a passionate advocate for awareness and research” during his illness. His family said he was grateful for the support he received from fans and asked for privacy as they grieved.
