From the moment they met in 1970 until Freddie Mercury‘s death on November 24, 1991, there was one person in his life he leaned on more than anyone else: Mary Austin. The two lived together for six years and were even engaged, but after they both came to terms with his sexuality, their romance shifted into something else entirely — a bond that lasted the rest of his life.

At the “Bohemian Rhapsody” singer’s funeral, Austin sent a wreath of yellow and white roses, a nod to what was reportedly his favorite color, and signed the note “always faithful,” an echo of his last words to her.
