SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) - The West Beach wading pool in Santa Barbara could be a piece of history and Chumash cultural element could replace the location with an educational site – including a tomal ocean canoe.
The Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department and Harbor Commission support another option, which could possibly include a design to recognize the Chumash culture and various tribal bands.
The location has been on the waterfront maps since 1939. Improvements were made in 2007.
In 2014, a leak was detected and water was lost at 2000 gallons a day. The site was shutdown.
Department Project Planner Holly Garcin said since then other ideas have been suggested beyond repairing the pool, and that included a splash playground.
They are popular in many areas, and Garcin says they can be part of a playground setting.
The project was placed on hold in 2020 during the COVID crisis.
Estimated costs to repair the small pool were about $1.5 million. A replacement pool has been estimated at $2.6 million. A splash playground would cost $1.27 million.
The area also had mature trees with protected birds nesting in them.
The city is working on a parks department master plan with widespread community outreach. That will include input on ideas for changes including projects to elevate the history of the Chumash culture in Santa Barbara, especially in areas where the tribes had villages.
A presentation on the wading pool and the parks ideas will be made to the City Council in 2027.
