The legendary actress, comedian, writer, singer, and producer turns 87 today. Born Mary Jean Tomlin on September 1, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, the celebrated star is best known for her work on projects such as Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, 9 to 5, and Grace and Frankie.
Tomlin attended Wayne State University with the intention of studying biology. After auditioning for a play, she knew she wanted a career in entertainment. After college, she began performing stand up in Detroit and later in New York City.
Her breakout role was on the sketch comedy show Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In from 1969 until 1973. In 1975, made her way to the big screen in Robert Altman’s Nashville.
She is well known for her collaboration and close friendship with Jane Fonda. The duo has appeared together in the films 9 to 5 (1980), 80 for Brady (2023), and Moving On (2023). They also starred in the Netflix show Grace and Frankie from 2015 to 2022.
Tomlin and Fonda reflect on their careers and past experiences in an interview with AARP from 2015.
“I’ve changed quite a lot but, OK, not completely,” Tomlin said. “I was a perfectionist then. I thought I looked too thin. And I still worry about photographs. Even now I’ll say to the person behind the camera: ‘You sure you’ve got the shot?'”
Luckily for fans, the star added that she does not see herself ever stepping away from the spotlight.
“Everything I’ve experienced has gone into my material,” she said. “My comedy is part of my life. I’ll never say, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, this is my last performance.’ Maybe my last for that day, sure, but not my last ‘last.'”
Throughout her illustrious career, Tomlin has earned seven Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, two Tony Awards, and an Academy Award nomination.
