Sunday, nearly 2,000 people gathered at Recess in the West Loop to simultaneously take shots of the iconic but polarizing Chicago liqueur as part of the challenge – 1,969 to be exact. Virtually, a live stream of the event peaked at 18,000 viewers, a spokesperson for the bar said.
The last time an attempt took place, there were between 20 and 100 people in attendance, the spokesperson added.
Tickets to the event sold out quickly. At one point during the event, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker got behind the bar to help pour and hand out the shots. He even took one himself.
The was event is centered around Jeppson’s Malört, which has been distilled in the Chicago area since the 1930s and has recently seen a surge in notoriety. The beverage is famously bitter, and it has become infamous because of Chicago-area residents giving it to unsuspecting visitors from other parts of the world.

Those who attended got a mini bottle of Malört to take home. There were other prize giveaways, live entertainment and special guests.
A portion of the proceeds for the event went towards the Ravenswood Community Services, an organization which provides meals and groceries to those in need in the Uptown and Ravenswood neighborhoods in Chicago.
