Mayor Brandon Johnson is inviting supporters to a “special announcement” next month.
NBC Chicago’s Political Reporter Mary Ann Ahern was the first to share the post by the mayor’s campaign, with political sources telling NBC Chicago they expect the mayor to announce he is running for re-election.
For months he has not directly answered what his plans will be, including when he was asked during a forum hosted by NBC 5, Telemundo Chicago and WVON 1690 AM on Wednesday.
“I take these decisions incredibly seriously, and I made a commitment to the people of Chicago that I work hard to make the safest and most affordable big city in America,” Johnson said at the time. “That decision for reelection in politics, that will take care of itself.”
The timing of the announcement is slated for Sept. 13, about an hour before the Chicago Bears’ first game of the season.
The invite promises those who attend will “be part of history.”
Johnson’s polling hovers around 23% approval, with one recent survey showing just 14% of those surveyed want him to seek a second term.
NBC Chicago has reached out to Brandonforchicago.com but have not heard back.
Petitions are currently circulating for mayoral candidates, but are not due until later this year.
Already, there are numerous contenders looking to potentially unseat him.
That list includes two statewide officials in Illinois, as Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias and Comptroller Susana Mendoza have both already said they will run in next year’s mayoral race.
Rep. Mike Quigley has also said he will seek the office, and Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas has also indicated she plans to run for mayor.
Businessman and philanthropist Willie Wilson has also launched a campaign, as have businessman Mark Su, Dr. Lisa Nee, businessman John Kelly, businessman Joe Holbert, and Cook County Board of Review member George Cardenas.
Former Chicago Housing Authority CEO Matt Brewer is also running.
