Micky Moody turns 76 on Aug. 30, marking more than six decades as a guitarist—and a career that helped shape the original sound of Whitesnake.
Moody was there before the band became an MTV-era rock powerhouse. After playing on David Coverdale’s first two solo albums, White Snake and Northwinds, Moody became a founding member of Whitesnake in 1978. He also helped bring guitarist Bernie Marsden into the group, establishing the two-guitar lineup that became central to the band’s bluesy hard-rock sound.
Moody played on the original recordings of several songs that would later become massive hits, including “Here I Go Again” and “Fool for Your Loving.” Other early Whitesnake staples included “Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City” and “Walking in the Shadow of the Blues.”
The guitarist’s slide playing became an important part of the band’s early identity, when Whitesnake was rooted more in British blues and hard rock than the polished arena-rock sound that would come later.
Moody left the band in 1983, before Whitesnake’s enormous commercial breakthrough. John Sykes eventually replaced him, and the group shifted toward the glossy sound that powered its 1987 self-titled album and hits including “Here I Go Again” and “Is This Love.”
While Moody missed that explosion, he continued working steadily as a guitarist and songwriter. He later reunited with former Whitesnake musicians for projects including The Company of Snakes and M3 Classic Whitesnake, and formed the Moody Marsden Band with Marsden.
Moody may not have been standing beside Coverdale, 74, during Whitesnake’s MTV heyday, but his fingerprints are all over the band’s early music.
