I realize leading off our Friday bullets here might be choosing violence first thing in the morning, but let’s go. On Thursday, Corey Pronman re-ranked the 2022 NHL Draft class, which was interesting to me for a few reasons. First, Pronman has never been a big fan of Frank Nazar… but he appears to have warmed to the reality that Frank’s a pretty good player. How did he rank Nazar this time around? Also, this was the first draft class of Kyle Davidson’s tenure at Blackhawks general manager… and Kevin Korchinski has not panned out as well as anyone hoped (yet).
Pronman actually has Nazar ranked sixth in his re-ranking, with Blues forward Jimmy Snuggerud in his “Bubble top and middle of the lineup player” tier. That’s a move up from Nazar being picked 13th overall. Pronman ranks Blackhawks defenseman Sam Rinzel 20th (up from No. 25) and forward Ryan Greene moved up nicely, being ranked 23rd (from pick No. 57). Rinzel and Greene came in Pronman’s “Middle of the lineup player” tier. Korchinski falls from pick No. 7 to being re-ranked 44th in the prospect tier.
Then, on Friday morning, Pronman shared the biggest mistakes in his 2022 NHL Draft evaluations. Ten players are listed, and Nazar comes in at No. 6. Yes, Pronman admitted he might have missed on Nazar. Here’s what he wrote:
I loved Nazar’s speed and compete, but I saw a smaller center who had good, but not great offense, and I questioned how high up a lineup he would play. His college years seemed to vindicate my concerns, but once he turned pro, a light went on, and he’s been outstanding in Chicago’s system. He has the great effort and pace to go with the ability to make high-end plays.
Here’s my ongoing issue with pundits who did draft evaluations or have a “model” that projects NHL comps or whatever who wrote off Nazar because his two seasons at Michigan don’t look like a mid-first round pick on HockeyDB: he was injured. If your model doesn’t allow for concessions because a player was hurt, I’m not going to give two ****s about your model. And Pronman saying Nazar’s college years “vindicated his concerns” feeels like that conveniently helped support his narrative that has since been thrown out by Nazar’s play with the Blackhawks — when healthy.

Blackhawks netminders Drew Commesso and Adam Gajan come in at Nos. 21 and 22, respectively. Here’s what Ellis had to say about Commesso:Commesso had a solid three-game stretch with the Blackhawks last year, going 2-1-0. He also posted decent numbers in the AHL, despite Rockford missing the playoffs. The Hawks gave Commesso a two-year extension earlier this summer, so they clearly still value him in the system. I think he has what it takes to be an NHL backup, but with Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom under contract, I don’t see that happening this year. Soderblom is a UFA next summer, so they could flip him for an asset or let him walk if they truly believe in Commesso. So it might remain a slow burn but, given that he’ll be 24 at the start of 2026-27, it’s time to get him into NHL action.

Connor Bedard was at a community event in Vancouver this week and CTV in Vancouver decided to go ahead and give him a new title with the Blackhawks. Today is August 28 and there are still three notable restricted free agent forwards not signed: Anaheim’s Cutter Gauthier, Columbus’ Adam Fantilli and Montreal’s Zach Bolduc. Defensemen Alexander Nikishin in Carolina and Simon Edvinsson in Detroit also still need a contract. Of those five players, only Gauthier and Nikishin aren’t eligible for an offer sheet. Also still unsigned: Blackhawks RFA defensemen Kevin Korchinski and Ethan Del Mastro. The Edmonton Oilers announced the hiring of Misha Donskov as a coaching consultant on Thursday. This is a fascinating move — after hiring Mike Babcock as their head coach this summer. Donskov, 49, is currently Hockey Canada’s vice president of hockey operations and a coach for the Canadian men’s national team. Around lunchtime in Chicago, Connor Hellebuyck’s agent effectively told Winnipeg to pound sand and trade his client. Thoughts and prayers to Kevin Cheveldayoff and the rest of the Winnipeg Jets’ front office over the next two weeks. No, the Blackhawks do not need Hellebuyck and should not trade for him. Spencer Knight is younger and more cost effective. And I have legit concerns about there being five years remaining on Hellebuyck’s contract. Earlier on Thursday, Elliotte Friedman tweeted that the Colorado Avalanche are closing in on a “biggie” of an extension with Cale Makar.
