Illinois’ second largest school district has expanded its school cell phone ban to younger students for the 2026-27 school year.
Suburban District U-46, which serves more than 35,000 students in the western suburbs including in Elgin, South Elgin, Bartlett, Streamwood, Hanover Park is currently in year two of cell phone ban for 7th and 8th graders.
This year, the ban covers 6th graders, too, the district said.
“It’s like the 90s again,” Canton Middle School principal Kim Rudden said.
District U-46’s ban comes one year before a new, statewide cell phone ban will go into effect. Starting in 2027, all Illinois schools will have a “bell-to-bell” policy, which would ban the use of phones from the first bell of the school day to dismissal.
As part of the statewide law, all K-8 Illinois public schools would be required to provide storage options for students to help prevent use, loss or theft of their devices.
In a news release announced the statewide law, State Rep. Michelle Mussman said cell phone use in classrooms is a “significant distraction” and impacts youth metal health.
“By creating clear limitations on phone use in schools, with thoughtful exceptions, we’re ensuring our students are more engaged in their lessons while freeing our teachers to focus on curriculum instead of classroom management,” Mussman’s statement said. “Students will be encouraged to interact more with their educators and peers, which is essential to social development. This bill will create a more positive and impactful teaching and learning environment.”
At District U-46 schools, students who bring in cell phones — along with smart watches or tablets — must place them into a pouch that remains locked for the day. At the end of the school day, staff helps to unlock the pouches using a special device.
The only tech allowed inside the schools, officials say, are Chromebooks.
