Partial lunar eclipse tonight: What will it look like, and will you need glasses to view it? ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Don’t miss it! The sky will look a bit different Thursday night thanks to a near-total lunar eclipse.

The sight happens late Thursday night, when Earth’s shadow briefly envelopes the moon. Almost the entire lunar surface will be masked Thursday night into Friday — a whopping 96% — making this an especially deep partial eclipse.

“96% of the moon’s visible disk will be inside Earth’s darkest shadow at its peak,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said.

Much of the moon is expected to turn a reddish-orange color, which comes from sunlight bending through the Earth’s atmosphere before reaching the moon.

“It’s just like seeing a sunset reflected back to us,” Jeanes said.

Because its a partial eclipse, the lineup won’t be a true “blood moon,” which is typically reserved for total lunar eclipses. The partial phase of the eclipse will last more than three hours. But the entire eclipse, from the time the full moon enters the faintest, outermost edge of Earth’s shadow until it leaves, will stretch 5 ½ hours.

In the Chicago area, skies are expected to be clear, and you won’t need eclipse glasses to see it.

“And yes, it’s also safe to view with the naked eye,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Iisha Scott said.

According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, the partial lunar eclipse begins at 9:33 p.m. Central time. It will peak at 11:12 p.m. and end at 12:51 a.m. Friday.
