GIRARD — Tony Scandy, former professional basketball player Wayne “Rare Air” Clark and Cardinal Mooney’s Chris Vass were all winners Saturday night in feature fights of Jack Loew’s “Summer Slam, Battle for the Belt” amateur boxing show at the Metroplex Expo Center.
The 10-bout card, presented by Loew and in conjunction with his South Side Boxing Club, had Scandy (6-1) of SSBC defeating Jimmy Rudzik (0-1) of Struthers’ Burnside Boxing Club in the main event while Clark and Vass each won their co-main match-ups by unanimous decision.
Scandy stopped Rudzik — he was making his amateur debut — when referee Ed King stopped the highly anticipated heavyweight match-up just 86 seconds into the contest.
“I knew Jimmy was strong and could hit, but other than that did not know much about him going into the fight,” said Scandy, who won for the sixth time in seven pairings. “He came hard so I went to war with him.”
In one co-main, SSBC’s Vass scored a unanimous decision over John Davis (15-9) of Youngstown’s Golden String Boxing Club for his fifth consecutive win, running his record to 15-1 overall in 16 amateur pairings.
“The goal was to be first, attack the body and use my jab, which is what I did all three rounds,” Vass said. “He lost four or five fights that could have gone either way, and I knew that his record could have been much better than what it was coming into the fight.”
In the other co-main, the 49-year-old Clark, a former college basketball standout who was also a key member of the world famous Harlem Globetrotters traveling basketball team, needed all three rounds — he scored a knockdown in the first round — as he came out victorious over Phil Albenze (3-3) of Golden String B.C. to win for the third time in four ring appearances.
“Had he connected, I would have been in big trouble because he definitely can hit,” Clark said of Albenze after the fight. “I am having a lot of fun and will do this as long as the Good Lord lets me. My father’s younger brother, my Uncle Zane, used to spar with former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes and I would accompany my dad so we could go watch him. I wish now that I had paid more attention because I really love this sport.”
In a 132-pound scrap, Juan Rivera (10-8) of SSBC scored a split decision victory over Xoren Raduscwiecz (9-10) of Charlerois, Pennsylvania while Noel Sanchez (6-7) of Euclid’s Left to the Chin Boxing Club was a winner, also by split decision, over Tyrell Richards (6-2) of SSBC at 140 pounds.
“I’m just getting back into the swing of things as this was my first fight in three years,” Rivera said. “I have been running, sparring and training and even with that I felt a little tired at the end of the fight. That’s no excuse.”
John Gentile of Kelly Pavlik’s Ghost Boxing Club evened his record at 1-1 with a unanimous decision over Cleveland’s Andreas Jones (0-1) in a 150-pound pairing while Carlos Torres (2-6) of Lorain posted a unanimous decision over Travon Winnick (0-3) of Cleveland in their 120-pound bout. Gentile forced a standing eight-count of Jones in the second round.
“The difference tonight was that I got in a lot more sparring and work overall,” Gentile said. “I trained five days a week and what has helped me most is that it has given me a better mindset. He was an excellent opponent, but the key was landing my body shots and straight punches.”
An 85-pound scrap had SSBC’s Kingsley Wade (4-6) defeat Jaylen Moore (2-7) of Bulldog Boxing Club by split decision, while Omar Muhammed (15-3) of Lorain defeated Shaleek Cooke (3-4) of Golden String B.C. in their 165-pound fight when their bout was stopped by King at two minutes and 32 seconds in the second round.
“I was way taller than my opponent so I used my range to my advantage,” Wade said. “I just came out each round and tried to set the tone with my jabs and hooks.”
The other bout of the night had Jayden Orr (6-3) of Richmond, Ohio top Dominic Delvalle (0-2) of Ashtabula by unanimous decision in their 145-pound contest.

150 pounds — John Gentile (1-1, Youngstown, Kelly Pavlik’s Ghost Boxing Club) def. Andreas Jones (0-1, Cleveland), unanimous decision.
120 pounds — Carlos Torres (2-6, Lorain) def. Travon Winnick (0-3, Cleveland), unanimous decision.
85 pounds — Kingsley Wade (4-6, SSBC) def. Jaylen Moore (2-7, Austintown, Bulldog Boxing Club), split decision.
