NCAA record holder Luca Urlando will not swim for Georgia for the upcoming season and has instead gone pro, the school confirmed to SwimSwam Tuesday night.
Back at the 2025 NCAA Championships, Urlando had said he had two years of eligibility remaining and planned to use both which would have led him to competing for the upcoming 2026-2027 season. Urlando has already graduated with his undergraduate degree from Georgia, the school confirmed.
Urlando was scheduled to compete at the 2026 NCAA Championships but scratched a week before the meet due to a “minor injury.” He was the top seed in the 200 butterfly, an event he holds the NCAA record in after swimming a 1:36.41 at midseason in November 2025. That was not the first time he battled injury as back in November 2022, Urlando had to be helped out of the pool during a 100 IM at the FINA World Cup. He underwent surgery later that month.
The 24 year old will become a pro swimmer and most recently represented the U.S. at the 2026 Pan Pac Championships where he swam to gold in the 200 fly in a 1:53.11 and also won bronze in the 100 fly in a 50.99. He notably swam a lifetime best 50.86 in prelims.
In summer 2025, Urlando swam to a gold medal in the 200 fly at the 2025 World Championships as he touched in a 1:51.87. That swim made him just the 4th sub-1:52 performer in history. He also swam the 200 fly representing the U.S. at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The Georgia men finished 15th with 64.5 points at the 2026 NCAA Championships, swimming without Urlando. The team was 7th at the 2025 NCAA Championships led by Urlando as he scored 45 individual points including a win in the 200 fly.
