Local lawmakers are calling on Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign a bill requiring businesses to disclose how they use artificial intelligence.

The AI Labor Information Act — which has passed in both the state Senate and Assembly — is first-in-the-nation legislation that would require private employers to report to the New York State Department of Labor how AI is affecting their workforce. That includes job roles and hiring.

“We hear from technology companies that more jobs are coming. AI is creating a slew of jobs. That may be true. But, those jobs are not here today, and the layoffs are happening now,” state Senator Michelle Hinchey said.

Hinchey traveled to Rochester from the Hudson Valley to emphasize the importance of statewide guardrails.
