ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A comparison of grocery prices across eight major supermarkets reveals significant savings for shoppers willing to change where they buy their food.
The online magazine Allrecipes took the same list of 37 everyday items to eight grocery stores and always chose the least expensive option, buying store brands when available. Five of the stores are in the Rochester area.
Aldi came out as the clear winner with a total of $109. Walmart came in second at $119, followed by Target and Wegmans, which both totaled $134. Trader Joe’s was the most expensive at $156.
“It won hands down,” said an Allrecipes representative. “The second winner was Walmart that kind of got a little bit closer to Aldi in a couple of things like the produce, but ultimately Aldi was the winner.”
News10NBC reporter Deanna Dewberry tested the findings by comparing four items from the list at both Aldi and Trader Joe’s. The results showed dramatic price differences, particularly in the meat section.
A two-pound bag of carrots cost $2 at Aldi, the same price as two one-pound bags at Trader Joe’s. Romaine lettuce hearts were 30 cents cheaper at Trader Joe’s at $2.99 compared to $3.29 at Aldi.
However, ground beef at Trader Joe’s cost $6.49 per pound compared to $2.39 per pound at Aldi, a difference of more than $4 per pound. Boneless skinless chicken breast at Trader Joe’s was $4.99 per pound, while Aldi sold it for $2.19 per pound.
“These were things in the everyday list that he was shopping for,” said Ariel Knutson, Senior Editorial Director at Allrecipes.”You know it’s things like skinless boneless chicken breast, salmon, tofu, a gallon of milk.”
“Another big tip we have is making sure you’re shopping at potentially different grocery stores,” Knutson added.
One strategy is to buy protein and produce at Aldi and shop at another grocer for everything else. The current trade war with Canada and the 50 percent tariff could increase prices on everything from milk to makeup, making strategic shopping even more important.
