Opinion .. Use it or lose it: Take advantage of campus resources ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Last semester, a professor gave my class a unique assignment — check out three books from the University of Alabama’s libraries. I, like most students, had never considered my ability to check books out of the library up until that point, but I found immense joy in combing through the endless stacks that line the campus libraries.

This assignment made me consider the wide array of resources and privileges that we have at our fingertips as students. Unfortunately, many of them are underutilized. These assets can provide fun activities, academic help and more, but they rely on student support and use to remain available. As such, students should take advantage of valuable resources when the opportunity arrives.

As college students, it is important to work toward building the best version of ourselves. Alabama emphasizes the pursuit of knowledge in the Capstone Creed, and being an informed and responsible citizen is important to success in any field. There are many university-provided resources that assist in these areas.

Aside from the physical materials available, University Libraries facilitates a free subscription to The New York Times for students and faculty, and last fall, SGA secured access to The Wall Street Journal. In addition, UA Student Media publications ensure students are up to date on campus happenings.

Various campus organizations also offer opportunities for entertainment, socialization and learning through special programming. Most students are familiar with University Programs, yet aside from a few big events sprinkled throughout the year, many of the nearly 150 yearly programs do not receive the attendance they deserve.

From Pop Culture Jeopardy to watch parties for away football games, there is something for just about anyone.

Academically, students can attend free supplemental instruction and tutoring through the Capstone Center for Student Success, practice interviews and get professional headshots at the Career Center, and revise papers through the Writing Center.

Many students, feeling that these resources are for struggling students, may be reluctant to visit, but I can attest that students with various objectives and skill levels can find use in these resources — they exist for a reason.

When necessary, students also have access to the Counseling Center, as well as the Division of Student Life which offers various other programs that support student well-being.

Listing all of the resources at hand for students would be a herculean task, but the few examples provided illustrate the extensive breadth available. Almost all students would agree that the existence of such a wide support system is a positive, yet reluctance to use it denies these initiatives any measurable results, decreasing the likelihood that they will continue to exist in the future.

When choosing Alabama for your studies, it is likely that the availability of tools and programming influenced your decision. Student tuition also goes towards funding campus resources, so refusal to use them is simply selling yourself short.

College is meant to be an all-encompassing, life-transforming experience, and properly equipping oneself to face it is vital to success. No man is an island, and no student is either.
