Yesterday, we looked at the women’s returning points for the 2026-202 season and today we are taking a look at the men’s. The two-time champion Texas men are looking very good to challenge for a third straight title in 2027 with the most returning points for the season.
See the women’s returning points breakdown here.
At the 2026 NCAA Championships, the Texas men scored 284.5 individual points, just half-a-point more than Florida’s individual number of 284. The Longhorns, however, have a relatively high number of returning points for 2026 with 63.8% coming back for a total of 181.5 returning points. This is exactly 40 more than Indiana’s 141.5 returning.
As we mentioned yesterday, there are a number of factors to consider when making predictions for the 2027 men’s NCAA Championships, but returning points tell a major part of the story.
Before we get into the analysis, there are a few important notes:
This data comes directly from our 2026 NCAA Championships box score article courtesy of Andrew Mering. Class and returning scoring comes from an athlete’s listed official class in the NCAA results, which means there might be a few hiccups from swimmers who have a redshirt year, but were categorized as seniors. If you notice any feel free to let us know in the comments. We have gone in and removed “returning” points from teams who lost athletes to transfers. We have not added those points to their new school’s total. We did our best to account for all transfers, but might have missed some. For example, Michigan’s Luka Mladenovic was a big transfer after he scored 32 individual points for Michigan during the 2026 meet. Mladenovic’s points have been removed from Michigan’s total, but they have not been added to Texas, where he is swimming this season. The NCAA and local/federal courts are currently battling over 5th year eligibility for the 2026-2027 season for athletes who graduated high school in 2022. For the purposes of this article, we are not including them in the returning points.Like yesterday, the first thing we are looking at is the total scored by each class at the 2026 NCAA Championship meet.
The men’s data is a lot more clear when it comes to total points scored, with each class scoring more points than the class before them. The seniors had the most total points scored at the meet, bringing in 781.5 points, or 31.51% of the 2480 total individual points at the meet.
The junior class was next with 570 points (22.98%), then came the sophomore class with 497 points (20.04%), and finally the freshmen class with 481 points (19.40%).
The 5th years scored the least with 150.5 points, or 6.07% of the total, which is to be expected since most athletes with additional COVID eligibility graduated in 2025.
Points Scored By Class
Points Percentage of Total Freshmen 481 19.40% Sophomore 497 20.04% Junior 570 22.98% Senior 781.5 31.51% 5th Year 150.5 6.07%The graduating points data shows a similar trend with the percentage of returning scores coming in lower across the board than we saw on the women’s side. None of the teams who finished in the top-five in 2026 are returning more than 70% of their points. Texas leads the way with 63.80% returning for the 2026-27 season.
Virginia Tech is the highest finishing team that is returning all of their individual points from 2026 with all 42 of their 42 individual points.
Arizona State, who was bolstered by a particularly strong transfer class last year to finish 4th overall, returns one of the lowest percentages of points in the top-10 teams with only 41.78% (61 points) of their 146 2026 individual points returning for the season. Michigan only returns 26 points (28.89%) of their 90 individual points which helped them finish 8th overall in 2026. They sit in 16th in the returning points rankings. They have some strong transfers though, including divers, which will help. Indiana returns 60.73% (141.5 points) and Tennessee returns 62.28% (104 points). Pittsburgh did very well at the 2026 NCAA Championships, and they will not return any of their individual points after Julian Koch announced his transfer to Tennessee and a large number of their relay swimmers have also transferred following the resignation of head coach Chase Kreitler. Cal, who had their worst finish in recent memory of 7th overall, will be hoping to move back into the top-five this season, returning 78.05% (96 points) of their 123 total from 2026. The University of Virginia men will also be seeking a potential top-five finish as they return 89.81% (97 points) of their 108 points, the highest returning percentage in the top-ten finishing teams,Returning Points
