No. 18 Alabama soccer beat No. 15 Texas Christian University Thursday night in the home opener 3-2. This is Alabama’s second game in a row in which it has beaten a higher ranked opponent, the first being against Memphis.

“The vibe is good, the confidence and we’ve proven that we can grind out results,” head coach Wes Hart said. “I think this group has shown a lot of toughness.”

This makes Alabama’s all time record against TCU 2-4, with this being the first win since 2009.

In the eighth minute, Alabama was awarded a penalty kick after a four-minute-long VAR review. The review landed in the Crimson Tide’s favor with a hand ball on TCU defender Cameron Patton.

Forward Larkin Thomason stepped up to the penalty mark and sent the ball to the back of TCU’s net to score the opening goal.

“I’m very confident going up there,” Thomason said. “My teammates got my back regardless of if it goes in or it doesn’t go in.”

TCU answered with a goal of its own just shy of eight minutes later. Midfielder Emma Yolinsky sent the ball to the bottom left of the goal off her right boot.

The Crimson Tide was quick to capitalize on a corner kick in the 17th minute. TCU scored an own goal, giving Alabama the lead.

For the rest of the half, the game was end-to-end between the two teams, with Alabama taking four more shots against three from TCU.

The second half started hot with a TCU goal in the 48th minute from Yolinsky.

Alabama forward Ashley Roni responded in the 55th minute with a 2-on-1 breakaway to send the ball

through TCU goalkeeper Olivia Geller’s hands.

In the 74th minute, forward Kennedy Garcia received a yellow card for a tackle on a TCU player.

TCU’s Yolinsky took a close shot in the 81st minute, but Crimson Tide goalkeeper Madi Munguia pushed it over the net for the save. This elicited a loud response from the crowd and its mass of vuvuzelas.

“It’s awesome, the environment we feed off of that so much,” Thomason said. “When they’re loud it helps us on the field.”

Alabama held the Horned Frogs for the rest of the game to keep the final score 3-2.

The Crimson Tide will be back in action this Sunday at Nebraska for a 12:05 p.m. CDT start time. The game will be on B1G+.
