Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said Friday that the giant Julius Nyerere Dam and Hydroelectric Power Station in Tanzania, implemented by an Egyptian consortium, stands as a prominent example of Egypt’s soft power in Africa.
Speaking exclusively to Extra News, Madbouly said it was an honor to attend the inauguration and commencement of operations at the dam and power station on behalf of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Madbouly said the project’s successful completion was the result of close and continuous follow-up by President Sisi throughout its various implementation stages.
He noted that the government had submitted monthly reports to the president detailing progress on the project, underscoring the importance the Egyptian state attached to its completion.
He added that the leaderships of Egypt and Tanzania had maintained close coordination and issued continuous directives to overcome obstacles and facilitate the project’s implementation.
The inauguration marks a major milestone in Egyptian-Tanzanian cooperation, with the project having been carried out by an Egyptian consortium comprising The Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric, under the supervision and oversight of the Egyptian government.
The Julius Nyerere project is one of Tanzania’s major strategic undertakings in the field of hydroelectric power generation. Built on the Rufiji River, the project is designed to help meet the country’s growing electricity needs and strengthen its power-generation capacity.
The project is also expected to contribute to reducing flood risks and supporting Tanzania’s economic development plans.
The landmark project reflects the growing scope of Egyptian-Tanzanian cooperation in infrastructure and energy, particularly through large-scale projects aimed at supporting sustainable development and improving essential services.
The prime minister said the Julius Nyerere Dam project stands as a testament to Egyptian expertise in implementing major international projects, highlighting it as clear evidence of the strong partnership between Egypt’s public sector and private companies.
In exclusive remarks to Extra News, Madbouly said the project also refutes previous claims that Egypt opposes development in Nile Basin countries.
He stressed that Egypt has always supported development efforts in the Nile Basin in a way that serves the interests of Egypt and Sudan.
“The Nile water issue is a matter of existential importance to Egypt,” Madbouly stressed.
Earlier Friday, Madbouly departed Cairo International Airport for Dodoma, the capital of Tanzania, heading a high-level delegation to attend, on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, the inauguration of the Julius Nyerere Dam and Hydroelectric Power Station.
The landmark project was implemented by the Egyptian consortium of the Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric.
Madbouly said his participation, on behalf of President Sisi, in the inauguration ceremony, attended by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, reflects Egypt’s commitment to strengthening intra-African cooperation and building successful strategic partnerships with countries across the continent.
He said these partnerships seek to advance sustainable development through joint projects in a range of sectors, contributing to greater progress and prosperity for peoples in Africa.
