Power outages, storm cleanup and now a water main break.
As thousands of northwest Indiana residents remain without power while they continue fixing damage from a tornado last week, a water main break in Munster added to the mess and stress for people in one of the town’s neighborhoods.
On Friday, Ben Jackson and his wife stopped by to check on his mother-in-law’s house.
“Everything looks fine right now, but with the power being out, the sump pump doesn’t work,” Jackson said. “So we have to worry about that, but we’re hand bailing the sump pit just making sure water doesn’t build up.”
Jackson and his wife flew in from Cleveland to care for his wife’s mother. She’s 80 years old and is currently staying at a hotel waiting for services to be restored and now for the water main to be fixed.
“It was just like what else can happen and hopefully this is an isolated incident and that it doesn’t start happening all over town,” said Jill Jackson.
Public works got everything repaired and patched up before midday on Fran Lin Parkway between Columbia and Oriole, but the tornado clean-up is still ongoing in the neighborhood.
Around 1,400 customers are still without power in Munster, according to NIPSCO. Some businesses, however, were fortunate to reopen.
“We’ve been out of power for almost a week, and we had the power back on, and yesterday it went out again,” said Robert Mendoza, owner of El Salto Mexican Restaurant.
Employees returned to work at El Salto in Munster hoping for a busy afternoon and to make up for what they lost.
“Financially it’s a big loss,” he said. “I mean for everyone, it’s not just us, everyone is in the same boat.”
The owner has five locations in northwest Indiana and told NBC Chicago the outage has cost him more than $100,000 in lost revenue and inventory. Despite the setback, he said they’ll bounce back.
“We’re here for each other; that’s what we got to do in this situation,” he said. “Support each other and help each other as much as we can.”
NIPSCO hopes to have power restored to all customers in Munster by Monday, August 24.
