After winning back-to-back La Liga titles and signing arguably the best midfielder on the planet, the mood should be optimistic at Barcelona. Ahead of the 2026-27 season, though, there are still questions to be answered.
After winning La Liga for a second consecutive season in 2025-26, and a 29th time overall, Barcelona are back for more and have a couple of very interesting new additions from the Premier League.
João Cancelo is back again, and Lamine Yamal will surely produce plenty as they always do.
But between now and the end of the transfer window, Barcelona will likely have to move for someone up front.
Do Barcelona Have the Best Midfield in the World?
If they have a gap up top, they certainly don’t in midfield. Barcelona already had options that were the envy of many, and then they went and signed probably the best midfielder in the world.
Rodri was largely sensational for Manchester City, even winning the Ballon d’Or in 2024, though he struggled to find his best form after recovering from an ACL injury suffered in late 2024.
However, Pep Guardiola predicted last season that the cultured midfielder would be back to his best at the 2026 World Cup, and he was absolutely right.
Rodri played a huge role in Spain securing their second men’s World Cup, and he even won the Golden Ball award for the tournament’s best player.
It is therefore tremendous timing that he has returned to Spanish football this summer, with Barça forking out a reported €76.5 million for him.
Adding him to a midfield that already contains international teammates Gavi, Pau Cubarsí was sent off in the first-leg defeat to Atléti last season but is coming off an excellent World Cup where he won the Young Player of the Tournament award, and Flick will hope to build a solid base around him.
Those big nights under the lights in the Champions League are made for clubs like Barça, and they will be eager to show their dominance from La Liga on the biggest stage.
