‘One of the most memorable movies of 2026': What to watch and stream this week ...Middle East

The summer blockbuster season may be winding down, but there are still some things worth watching,

Richard Roeper shares his takes:

“Mutiny” (in theaters)

We’ve had so many “Die Hard” retreads over the years that we’re now getting retreads of “Die Hard” retreads. The uninspired and at times laughable Jason Statham actioner “Mutiny” is a rehash of “Under Siege,” which was basically “Die Hard” on a battleship. This time around, we’re on a cargo ship. That’s about the only difference.

Displaying a range of emotions that makes Vin Diesel look like Daniel Day-Lewis, the ever-growling Statham plays one Cole Reed, the obligatory former British special forces operative and London Metropolitan Police Inspector who for the last five years has been working as bodyguard for a Bangkok-based billionaire shipping mogul (Ramon Tikaram). When Reed’s boss is assassinated in an ambush, Reed is framed for the murder—and his quest for justice and vengeance leads him to the aforementioned cargo ship. Let the gruesome kills begin.

Filled with unintentionally hilarious dialogue and quick-cut action scenes in which Reed quickly dispatches generic villains with his fists, guns, knives, an axe, etc., “Mutiny” is a slick, forgettable film that is getting a theatrical release but plays like a straight-to-video B movie.

“Don’t Say Good Luck” (Netflix)

With “Miss Stevens” (2016), “Stargirl” (2020), “Hollywood Stargirl” (2022) and now “Don’t Say Good Luck,” director Julia Hart is one of our best and most prolific storytellers in the coming-of-age genre, and this latest entry might be her most accomplished work yet. You just want to wrap your arms around this entire movie.

Sunny Sandler is a bundle of charm, empathy and talent as Sophie, an aspiring musical theater performer who lands a plum role in her high school’s annual musical, “Waitress.” In the early going, we settle in and get comfortable learning about Sophie’s life. She’s a big sister who endures the endless curiosity of her twin brothers Ethan and Caleb (Eitan and Matan Friedman). She enjoys a close relationship with her mom Elizabeth (Melanie Lynskey) and dad Ted (Max Greenfield), who always seem a bit overwhelmed by the whole parenting thing but are ever-present in their children’s lives. They’re the cool mom-and-dad precisely because they’re NOT cool. Sophie’s busy schedule also includes quality time with her best friend Carolyn (Scarlett Estevez) and Ms. Parker (Stephanie Beatriz), a teacher who is directing the play. Life is good. Close to downright idyllic.

Then comes the news: Elizabeth’s cancer has returned. For the duration, “Don’t Say Good Luck” deftly navigates multiple lanes, from family dramedy to musical to possible heartbreak. The screenplay by Hart and her husband and longtime collaborator Jordan Horowitz and Laura Hankin is smart, insightful and beautifully paced. This is Sunny Sandler’s film to carry, and she has true star power, whether she’s belting out a number, feeling the excitement (and the possible heartbreak) of a serious crush, or coping with the reality that her mother might not make it this time. Melanie Lynskey is heartbreakingly effective. The parent-teenager dynamic rings with true authenticity. Steve Buscemi and Bebe Neuwirth are as iconic as you’d expect them to be as Elizabeth’s parents, who arrive to help out but show up with a lot more baggage than what they’re physically carrying.

In lesser hands, “Don’t Say Good Luck” could have been little more than an elevated, 21st century version of a Movie of the Week. Thanks to the nuanced script, the sure-handed direction, the gorgeous cinematography and the outstanding cast, it’s one of the most memorable movies of 2026.

“Never Stop Chasing” (AMC River East Aug. 21-27)

Reed Timmer is arguably the most recognizable storm chaser in the world, known for his fearless enthusiasm as he willingly drives directly toward tornadoes with his team in one of his heavily armored “Dominator” vehicles. In the pulse-pounding documentary “Never Stop Chasing,” Timmer’s exploits are expanded from his decades-long presence on the Discovery Channel and YouTube and the like, to the big screen. Even given the devastating run of storms that have pounded the Midwest this summer, this is the closest MOST of us will get to a tornado, and thank God for that.

“Never Stop Chasing” is a portrait of a man obsessed. A man with legitimate credentials (he has a Ph.D. in meteorology) who has achieved some scientific breakthroughs, but has also been accused by some in the community of grandstanding, with his “extreme meteorology” persona overwhelming the work. Director Ken Cole does touch on this, and the film delves into the dark side of the trade, including the deaths of three storm chasers in 2013. Mostly, though, this is an immersive experience, with Cole and a team of gifted (and no doubt adventurous) cinematographers utilizing a 22-camera setup, with a suitably grand and expressive original score performed by the Budapest Scoring Orchestra. The music goes all the way to 11—as does Reed Timmer.
