What it's like to live without power as thousands struggle for days in northwest Indiana ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Since last Tuesday, Renee Vaughn has been without power. She lives with her granddaughter Natasha Clay, who has been running errands for her family and elderly neighbors.

As of 4 p.m. Thursday, they are among 68,000 customers still without power as a result of last week’s catastrophic storms, according to the latest update from NIPSCO.

“I’m just trying to help her the best way I can so that she doesn’t get stressed,” Clay said.

Vaughn’s doctor told her to be careful of stress due to her heart condition. With a dislocated arm, Vaughn relies on her granddaughter to pull the string to get the generator started.

Long days have turned into long nights for the pair, as they stay up past 2 a.m. watching for any suspicious activities that could go unseen without streetlights.

“Something’s going to have to give, or I will be put in the hospital,” Vaughn said.

“I stay up with her,” Clay said. “You know, my car just got broken into, so now I’m a little traumatized. I’m shaken up.”

They have a generator that powers up their fridge. Clay goes from picking up fuel to picking up food. She is also her family’s emotional support.

“It’s hard,” Clay said. “[My grandmother] told me the other day that this situation got her feeling down, and she’s not feeling like herself, so I try to uplift her, tell her it’s going to be okay, even though I don’t know if it’s going to be okay.”

While NIPSCO is hoping to restore power to most communities within the coming days, there is also concern that some communities may not have power fully restored for another week as crews work to repair damage and reconfigure electrical infrastructure in the hard-hit area.

The August derecho knocked out power to more than 60% of the utility’s customers, and in all approximately 370,000 customers have lost power during a series of severe thunderstorms that have rocked the region in the last week, according to the utility.
