DeKalb County residents are being targeted by scammers claiming to be police officers while spoofing the Sheriff’s Office phone number.
According to a press release this week, multiple residents have contacted the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office over a scam in which a caller is spoofing its phone number.
The caller identifies themselves as a Sergeant Eric Westfall, and is telling victims they missed a federal grand jury date, and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest.
The caller then tells the victim they must withdraw money in order to avoid the arrest.
According to officials, there is no Sergeant Eric Westfall with the department.

Phone number spoofing occurs when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to a victim’s caller ID display, according to the FCC. In most instances, those scammers use scripts to try to steal money or personal information, including bank account numbers or Social Security Numbers.
Victims of spoofing scams can contact the FCC.
