2021 Bengals Comp, RB Rankings, Randle El’s Reflections, and Other Bears Bullets ...Middle East

We’re onto Cincinnati … and so are the Bears, whose joint practice sessions with the Bengals are underway as we type this out.

ICYMI: An early Bears injury update got our morning started. Who needs coffee when you have injury news to share? Kevin Kaduk’s Bears By 7 newsletter is a must-read for Bears fans. As someone who has looked up to Kevin since he was a young writer and reading his work since he was doing Yahoo!’s Big League Stew, I can’t fully put into words how much I enjoy reading his stuff about my favorite football team on the daily. Anyway, Wednesday’s installment of the newsletter made some comparisons between the 2025 Bears and 2021 Bengals that made me think differently about some things. This passage stopped me in my tracks because I hadn’t realized the similarities:

A young team with a generational Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, ahead of schedule but their early dreams dashed late by the Rams.

We’re talking about Caleb Williams and the 2025 Chicago Bears, right?

Well, yes.

But we’re also talking about Joe Burrow and the 2021 Cincinnati Bengals.

There are lessons to be learned here, folks! And Kaduk makes for an excellent professor for this football history lesson. The Bears don’t have a standout star like some of the groups above, but D’Andre Swift was the third-highest-graded running back in the league over the latter half of last season. Second-year player Kyle Monangai converted over 60% of third- and fourth-down runs last year, and Roschon Johnson somewhat surprisingly returns after seeing just four snaps through the first half of last season before he was placed on injured reserve. Last year, Chicago’s 15.1% explosive run rate trailed only the Ravens.

The ground game is at the core of what Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson wants to do with his offense. Unfortunately, one of his key pieces (Kyle Monangai) is dealing with a week-to-week injury. I’m choosing to see the silver lining (players such as Roschon Johnson, Brittain Brown, and Salvon Ahmed getting increased opportunities in practice and during preseason games) in the dark cloud. But I understand that isn’t how everyone’s mind works. Mandatory Credit: Mike Dinovo-Imagn Images Chris Kwiecinski (FOX-32 Chicago) gets some good quotes from Bears WRs Coach Antwaan Randle El, who looked back on his cameo as offensive playcaller for the team in its Preseason Week 1 win against the Cleveland Browns. It clearly meant a lot to him to get that opportunity, and I’m glad he made the most of it. Hopefully, when January rolls around, the Bears offense cooks to the point where Randle El gets some consideration for an offensive coordinator gig or even a head coaching opportunity. I’m always rooting for guys to climb the coaching ladder. And it would be a positive reflection on the Bears if they became a place that churned out quality assistant coaches. When the Bears’ head coach hinted that he could tab others to call plays this summer, I wonder if he was talking about Offensive Coordinator Press Taylor. Taylor didn’t have a good run as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ OC, but that doesn’t mean he can’t figure it out somewhere else. Obviously, Chicago’s head coach will call plays when games matter in the regular season. But perhaps Taylor can rebuild his coaching stock as Johnson’s right-hand man. For now, the Bears’ OC will take on the role Declan Doyle had last year where he does a ton of grunt work that frees his head coach to do some more important things. And let the record show that Taylor is quite good at that particular gig. Maybe that is his niche in this league. While we’re on the topic, I’d like to see Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen do something similar and give DBs Coach Al Harris a shot at calling plays. Harris received interest from teams looking for a defensive coordinator this past offseason. And while I’m glad that he did, I’m happy he is back for another year with Chicago’s football team. Here’s the Bears DC on new DE Marcus Davenport (via the Bears’ official website): “He’s always been a disruptive player. You can put on a lot of tape and see him in the backfield creating a lot of disruption. Everybody talks about the production. There’s a lot of hidden production in that he creates a lot of opportunities for other people. He understands the mentality and the mindset of how you know we want to play defense. And I think he’s a good fit. … Obviously the biggest thing for Marcus, and it’s been that way throughout his career, it’s his ability to be healthy and maintain his health. But when he’s out there, he’s a disruptive force.”

The White Sox avoided a sweep at the hands of the Cubs on Wednesday, leaving the Crosstown Classic series tied at 3-all with both teams winning a series at home. See ya in October! ICYMI: Patrick Kane is back with the Chicago Blackhawks. And now that he is back in the fold, the three-time Stanley Cup champion will find himself chasing the franchise’s assist record this season. Over at BN Bulls, more on a blockbuster NBA trade saw the Nuggets and Cavaliers execute a sign-and-trade deal that will send Peyton Watson from Denver to Cleveland. I’m sure fans in Cleveland, who were hoping LeBron James would come home again, accept this consolation prize.
