A guide to student necessities for dorm living ...Middle East

A new school year is likely to bring excitement and a sense of novelty. From the hunt for dorm necessities to navigating class schedules, as well as trying to find your footing on campus, the feeling of a fresh start can quickly become overwhelming.

While the best college preparation, especially for dorm rooms, unfortunately does not come with an instruction manual, the good news is that it is closer than you think: coming straight from student experiences.

Students living on campus quickly begin to realize the things that are necessary to live comfortably. Many college students underestimate the size of the dorm rooms and how compact their belongings need to be.

“I wish I had known how much less space you actually have than you think,” said Audrey Lueshen, a sophomore majoring in nursing. “You really don’t need to bring everything you own.”

Dorm room sizes and amenities at the University vary depending on the building. Residential halls provide students with either traditional or suite-style dorms, with traditional dorms having double-occupancy bedrooms, desk spaces for each resident, a shared or communal bathroom and a micro-fridge.

Individual private bedrooms in suite-style halls vary in size. Although smaller than a shared room, it offers more space for a single resident. Double-occupancy bedrooms in traditional-style dorms have a larger space, but lack storage due to being a shared space. Lueshen said there is a need for storage in such limited spaces, emphasizing how the room quickly fills up.

“I also wish I had brought more storage and organization items, especially things that could go under my bed or help maximize closet space,” Lueshen said. “You run out of room so quickly, so anything that helps you organize is really useful.”

Other students pointed out what they’d realized once they were already settled in their dorms. From necessities for comfortability to an extra pair of shoes, students quickly realized what they could not live without, and what could stand to go back home.

“I’m really glad that I brought [a dehumidifier] because this helps the room not feel so claustrophobic and like makes it have more air now,” said Emily Kramer, a freshman nursing major.

With campus becoming students’ new home, many students want to bring things that make their dorm their safe space.

“I wish I’d brought more stuff to make myself more comfortable,” said Antoine Autrey, a freshman majoring in aerospace engineering. “I didn’t bring a lot thinking that I didn’t want a lot, but now I want it to feel like home. So bring what makes you comfortable.”

Many students have different experiences when it comes to preparing to live on campus. But when packing for college, it is tempting to bring everything you think you’ll need, but it is best to have the essentials.

“You can always buy things once you’re in the dorm if you realize you need them,” Lueshen said. “Prioritize things that make your space more organized and comfortable rather than bringing things just because you think you might use them.”
