Women’s tennis shows preseason promise ...Middle East

Alabama women’s tennis finalized its fall schedule Monday after picking up a new assistant coach and a pair of transfers over the summer.

During the fall semester, women’s tennis is slated to compete individually at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic, hosted in Greenville, South Carolina at Furman University, and the Roberta Allison Classic hosted on campus at the University of Alabama.

In June, the Crimson Tide picked up Gerhard Gruindelingh as assistant coach. He previously worked at Duke University as the assistant coach for three seasons.

“I’m honored to be given the opportunity to join the Alabama family and to use my experience and expertise to help build up the women’s tennis program,” Gruindelingh said. “I can’t wait to get started.”

While Gruindelingh was Duke’s assistant coach, the Blue Devils had three straight NCAA appearances and a 12-0 conference record in 2025.

“Gerhard has had a lot of success at Duke and understands what it takes to be a top team in the nation,” head coach Jonatan Berhane said. “I look forward to working with him as we continue to build our program.”

Earlier in May, the Crimson Tide gained two from the transfer portal, Marcela Lopez and Korina Roso, while losing rising senior Kristina Paskauskas to Texas A&M. Paskauskas was the fourth player in Alabama women’s tennis history to bring home an ITA Women’s Singles Regional Championship title.

Lopez is entering her senior year wearing crimson for the first time, having previously played at Oklahoma State her junior year and at Utah before that. She has had experience playing at numerous positions across her collegiate career.

Roso, a rising junior, is joining Alabama after two years at Missouri. She played primarily in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots while at Missouri with a 19-15 singles record her sophomore year.

“We are very excited to welcome Korina and Marcela to our team,” Berhane said. “They bring valuable experience as they have both played in all singles positions before.”
