Egypt’s nuclear regulator has issued a statement on Tuesday, 18 August, explaining the safety standards of the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, following recently published allegations by Politico about potential violations during the project’s construction. The Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRA) said the plant is being implemented in line with internationally recognised nuclear safety and security standards and remains under continuous national regulatory oversight. According to the authority, all stages of construction are also subject to monitoring and support from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). ENRA said its oversight of the project includes reviewing licensing documents, approving construction activities, conducting daily and periodic inspections, and following up on any observations identified during inspections. The authority added that the licensing process took around 18 months and involved international experts. Daily inspections are carried out through a resident inspector system involving ENRA specialists, alongside experts from an international consultant with experience in the technology used at the plant, according to the statement.
