August 5th was supposed to be an exciting day for 15-year-old Jack Beatty, but the day took a horrifying turn after he was involved in an e-bike crash.
He was stopping at his high school for school pictures and to pick up supplies ahead of a new school year when the crash unfolded.
“He’s extremely intelligent, hilarious, very witty,” said Max Borchardt, a close family friend and employee of Jack’s parents’ tattoo shop. “The fact that he stepped up the way he has, I know his twin sisters are missing him.”
Jack never made it back home. He was involved in a crash near the school, while riding an e-bike. He was not conscious or breathing when medics arrived.
“Today, I can’t say much, but there has been some improvement which is promising,” Borchardt explained of his current condition. “Like any traumatic brain injury, he’s got a long road to recovery, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed.”
Borchardt is spearheading a fundraiser set for August 22nd and 23rd outside Dark Heart Tattoo in Crystal Lake, the shop that Jack’s parents, Joe and Chelsea Beatty, own and work at.They have not been able to work over the last several weeks while staying at Jack’s bedside and raising their four other children.
“Any funds we can help raise for them is going to help them,” Borchardt explained.
At least three teenagers in Chicago and one in the suburbs have died while riding e-scooters or e-bikes just this calendar year.
Lurie’s Children’s Hospital in Chicago has data on e-scooters specifically, and says crashes have jumped from 15 injuries in 2023 and 2024, then jumping to 50 in 2025.
Jack’s situation is, sadly, not unique.
“Watch out for everybody when you’re on the road. Wear a helmet. Just overall pay attention and be safe it’s a dangerous place out there,” Borchardt added.
An online fundraiser was started for Jack’s medical expenses and to help his family during this difficult time.
The Crystal Lake community is rallying together Saturday and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. outside the tattoo shop to raise more funds. The event is open to all.
